Is everyone eligible for unemployment (jobseeker's) benefit?
No. You must have left involuntarily — layoff, contract expiry, dismissal, etc. — and have 180+ insured days of employment insurance within the 18 months before resignation. Voluntary resignation is not eligible in principle, but exceptions apply if a legitimate reason for leaving is recognized.
How is jobseeker's benefit calculated?
It's calculated as 60% of your average wage before resignation, multiplied by your benefit days. The daily benefit amount has a floor and ceiling, so it's kept within this range even if your average wage is very low or very high.
How are benefit days determined?
They range from 120 to 270 days depending on your employment insurance enrollment period and age at resignation. If you're 50 or older, or have a registered disability, you get more benefit days for the same enrollment period.
Where do I apply for unemployment benefit?
After leaving your job, visit your local Employment Welfare Plus Center, or register as a jobseeker and apply for eligibility through the Worknet or Employment Insurance website.
What happens if I find a new job while receiving jobseeker's benefit?
If you find a new job early with at least half of your benefit days remaining and work for a certain period, you can receive an early reemployment allowance based on your remaining benefit days.
